Budget
During these difficult economic times, the budgets of businesses, towns and families have been hit hard. In order to serve in the best interests of our citizens, Norwalk’s leaders must find ways to make improvements while bringing in new revenue. Also, in order to save money while maintaining services, I propose consolidating certain services with surrounding municipalities.
Property Tax
Property taxes in Norwalk are too high. There needs to be a system in place where we can lower taxes yet increase services available to our citizens. Tax relief/rebates should be given to seniors, veterans, police officers, firefighters and teachers who live in our city. Other options for tax relief should be considered for those who volunteer or serve on boards and commissions.
Development Projects
The time to revitalize Norwalk is now. Various projects are underway that will better the future of our community. However, during these difficult economic times we must promote job growth for our own citizens. I support policies that place an emphasis on hiring Norwalkers first and outside contactors second. There is a pride in building in one’s community and we need to make sure that is always the case.
Housing
As Norwalk grows so will the prospects of available housing. Living in Fairfield County often creates a myth of wealth and comfort. While this idea is a goal for all, for most it is not a reality. Reasonable and affordable housing is a key component of a future Norwalk. While Norwalk consistently meets state requirements I do not object to the city exceeding those figures and providing a realistic living environment.
Public Safety
Everyone wants to live in a safe community. In order to accomplish this Norwalk must make it a priority. We must give our police and fire departments the necessary funding and equipment to be the guardians of our citizens. We must fight for every dollar available through federal and state grants and also encourage private investment programs as well.
Transparency
This is your government and your city. As a citizen you have the ultimate say. Unfortunately there is little opportunity for citizens to see or communicate the issues our community faces. I propose our council/mayor be available for an open forum at least once a quarter, preferably more often. Public hearings and town hall style meetings shall be held at various locations at various times of day. Accountability is key to success. Your voice must be heard!
Education
Education is the centerpiece of a successful community. Norwalk’s government must give its education system all the resources i.e. supplies & training it needs to continue making strides towards excellence. The city must ensure that its teachers, staff and administrators have all the resources they need to succeed and make our schools the learning centers of the future and to help our students be the leaders of tomorrow.
